I started making a 14th century cotehardie a while ago. I used the directions at www.cottesimple.com, which were really clear. I ran into troubles trying to fit myself. I thought he fitting went pretty well, and I felt like I had a good pattern. When I made up the dress, however, it looked like

The neckline of the shift will be cut down more, and I think I might have it on backwards. The shift itself doesn't fit very well, and I'll probably end up having to remake it. It's possible that some of the fit issues could be from that, but I have a feeling that the dress itself is the source of most of my problems. The dress is a wool flannel lined with linen. I only sewed a few of the eyelets so far, so the rest is fastened with safety pins, which is causing the gapping. There is plenty of ease to lace it lace all the way shut once the eyelets are done.
I can take a good deal more fabric out underneath the bust, and pulling it tighter did make the dress look a little better, but it didn't fix all the problems. My center back seam is a little wonky, probably from trying to fit myself. I do have someone who can help me fit now, and I'm hoping it's not too late for this dress. The shoulders aren't sewn yet either, just pinned, so some playing around with those might help. Does anyone have any ideas about what could be going wrong? I do have enough of the wool to start over, but I'd prefer to make this one work if possible as I did have plans for the rest of the fabric.
